Fijian Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama will move Ratu Wiliame Katonivere's name on Friday in Parliament to be the next President. In a post on his official Facebook page Bainimarama said Ratu Wiliame has accepted his nomination. The Prime Minister described the President-elect as one of the fiercest defenders of the ocean and of the right of Fiji's future generations to live in a clean, safe and natural environment.

The Fiji Rugby Union (FRU) has announced it will not resume domestic competition this year, and is planning for an early kick-off in 2022. Its CEO John O'Connor said after thorough consultation and careful consideration, it decided to cancel all the domestic competition for 2021.

The Fiji Rugby Union is planning another domestic sevens series as Covid-19 continues to disrupt the international sevens calendar. The inaugural 'Super 7s Series' was held earlier this year to help Fiji's preparation for the Olympic Games. The Fiji men's and women's sevens teams are due to resume training in Suva later this month, after a six week break following their success in Tokyo.

The Fijian Drua will be based in Australia for its inaugural season in Super Rugby. The Drua were this week confirmed as part of an expanded 12 team competition called 'Super Rugby Pacific', alongside Moana Pasifika and five teams each from New Zealand and Australia. But the Fijian team is unable to play on home soil in 2022 because of the country's ongoing Covid-19 situation and closed international borders.

Fiji's Paralympians Inosi Bulimairewa and Iosefo Rakesa are the first athletes to represent the Pacific at the 2020 Tokyo Games today. Athletics (Men's) Iosefo Rakesa is set to make his debut when he competes in the F41 shot put event at 10am, with Inosi Bulimairewa competing in the F64 javelin event at 7pm.

Fiji has dedicated its Olympic rugby sevens win to the people back home who are struggling amidst the country's Covid-19 health crisis. Fiji defeated New Zealand 27-12 in the men's sevens final in Tokyo to defend the title they won in Rio five years ago. Captain Jerry Tuwai said the win is very special for the team and all of Fiji.
