NEWS RELEASE: CHOGM 2024 in Samoa – the 21st of October to the 26th of October 2024

Samoa is set to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in 2024, bringing together delegations from 56 Commonwealth nations across Africa, the Caribbean and Americas, Europe, Asia, and the Pacific. Among them, 11 Pacific Island countries are members of the Commonwealth. Notably, 33 of the world’s 42 small states are Commonwealth members, including nine from the Pacific. Small states are particularly vulnerable to challenges such as climate change and development issues, making their participation vital. Regardless of size or wealth, all Commonwealth members have an equal voice. This landmark event will take place from October 21st to 26th, 2024, with the opening ceremony scheduled for October 25th at 11:00 AM local time.

CHOGM 2024 aims to strengthen multilateral cooperation, explore new opportunities, and tackle common challenges that affect member nations, ensuring a brighter future for generations to come. The summit will provide a platform for world leaders to collaborate on key issues such as climate change, economic development, peace, security, and human rights, with Samoa taking a leading role in these discussions.

Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mata’afa expressed her excitement about Samoa’s role as host:

“This is not the first time that the Pacific has hosted a CHOGM, but it is the first time that a Pacific Island country like Samoa will host a CHOGM. Samoa has an important opportunity to bring a unique perspective to the table and contribute to discussions on all aspects of political and socio-economic development.”

In addition to the official programme, several side events will be held prior to and during CHOGM 2024. These events serve as an inclusive space for Commonwealth Heads of Government, senior officials, business leaders, civil society, youth, and women leaders to showcase their work, present innovative solutions, and discuss the thematic issues central to CHOGM 2024.

The side events will provide critical opportunities for collaboration and exchange of ideas, allowing participants to explore practical actions to address shared challenges. A full list of side events is available on the official CHOGM website at https://samoachogm2024.ws/.

We extend our thanks to the host broadcasters, Radio 2AP and TV9 in Samoa, for allowing Pasifika TV to share some of the key events to the Pacific region using its Pasifika TV channels. For more information on when it will be showing in your region, please check your local broadcaster schedule.
