Solomon Islands marked its 47th Independence Anniversary on July 7.
The Solomon Islands was granted internal self-government in 1976, followed by independence from the British on July 7, 1978.
At independence, Solomon Islands joined the Commonwealth.
The event started with a parade starting at Town Council from the West side and Henderson on the east, to the National Stadium where the official programme was held.
Despite the wet weather conditions, hundreds of citizens turned up to celebrate the day at the stadium and Festival of Pacific Arts (FOPA) Village.
The Independence celebration is based on this year’s theme, unity and stability for transformation and prosperity.
Speaking at the event Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele says the Government for National Unity and Transformation acknowledges the challenges and opportunities the country has faced in the past years.
“Once again raise our flags and proclaim with pride that we are an independent and sovereign nation,” Prime Minister Manele says.
“Leadership must be rooted in humility, sacrifice and service to our people and country.”
As the country moves to its 50th anniversary, the Prime Minister calls on all citizens to reconnect themselves to the ideals that inspired independence.
“Let us build a nation that is peaceful and united, where we rise above division and tribalism, a nation that is accountable and transparent,” he says.
