Pasifika TV’s new digital platform sees Pacific stories reach beyond the coral reef

Pacific Cooperation Broadcasting Limited (PCBL) is excited to announce Eluvio will deliver its new “digital platform with a purpose” as it continues making strides towards achieving Pacific media sustainability and story sovereignty.

Launching in late October, the platform will host Pacific-curated content from PCBL’s 30 partner broadcasters and Pacific content creators with plans to include a revenue-share model that will return value directly to the region’s media ecosystem.

Eluvio, led by founders and inventors of Aspera Michelle Munson and Serban Simu, is based in Berkeley, California and its Global Broadcast Fabric infrastructure will enable PCBL content to reach its goal of sharing Pacific stories, told by Pacific people, to a global audience.

Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Michelle says it is an exciting time to be working with PCBL.

“PCBL is a mission-driven organisation with the trust of Pacific broadcasters, regional production companies, and content creators, and we’re honored the Eluvio Content Fabric, serving as a Global Broadcast Fabric, will enable them to distribute and monetise their exceptional regional news, sports, documentaries, and entertainment globally, for the first time,” Michelle says.

“In addition to traditional live and VOD programming, the platform will also deploy our Inline AI services to expand their content pipeline, using Eluvio’s AI-enabled analysis, clipping, search, and content composition, to scale efficiently from day one without requiring additional original production.

“For an organisation carrying this much cultural and economic responsibility, having zero-copy distribution, monetisation, and AI unified on a single platform isn’t just efficient, it gives PCBL the freedom to focus on their audiences and creators well into the future.”

Funded by New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), PCBL aims to build stronger relationships in the Pacific region by supporting the media sector.

In 2016, PCBL launched the Pasifika TV linear service to deliver gifted content from New Zealand production houses and rightsholders to its Pacific broadcast partners in the region.

Chief Executive Officer of PCBL Natasha Meleisea says just over ten years later, the new platform will now extend the reach of its broadcast partners and Pacific content creators via a direct-to-consumer streaming service, connecting diaspora audiences in New Zealand, Australia, the United States and elsewhere back to their home islands, preserving and sharing Pacific culture and stories, while providing the region’s broadcasters and content creators a new, equitable revenue stream.

“Our platform has a purpose — not only is it a gateway to Pacific stories, it is also a celebration of being Pacific; an opportunity to engage with our diaspora, and provide access to unique stories, trusted news, and entertainment to remain connected to home,” Natasha says.

“We also believe that it will strengthen regional relationships as we work collaboratively with our partners across 15 Pacific countries to build a sustainable media ecosystem for our beautiful blue continent.

“Beyond entertainment value, the platform will provide our regional media partners with a powerful new way to advocate for self-determination, sovereignty, and accountability, while educating the rest of the world about the beauty of and issues facing Pacific Island nations.

“After evaluating numerous alternatives, we selected Eluvio because it aligned with our goals and aspirations, had the most cost-effective, easy-to-use, and technologically advanced platform to securely scale into a global operation, while providing us a level of monetisation and viewer insights never before possible.

“We look forward to partnering with Eluvio to launch the platform in the months ahead.”
