The Pacific is getting ready to be heard, loud and clear, on climate change issues directly impacting the region at the UNFCCC 31st Conference of the Parties (COP31) in Antalya, Türkiye from November 9-20, 2026.
Helping to tell these stories are four Pacific media professionals, selected to complete the Pacific Cooperation Broadcasting Limited (PCBL) and Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) Pre-COP and COP31 Media Programme.

Papua New Guinea camera operators Varia Pekuku Omoa (EM TV) and Wari Ila from National Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), along with reporters Alex Dadamu with Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corporation (SIBC), and Riya Bhagwan from Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) will travel to Türkiye, supported by Pasifika TV’s Regional Content Manager Tia Soakai and the SPREP contingent.
The opportunity comes on the back of attending Pre-COP in Fiji and Tuvalu in October, where the realities of climate change were brought into talanoa between international leaders, further reinforcing the Pacific’s unified call for stronger global climate action, and implementation.
During their time in Fiji and Tuvalu, the Pacific cohort were able to explore the workings of international meetings and how to relay important key messages back to their island communities, and they will put their skills into use again alongside world media and leaders, at COP31.
The cohort will be based out of the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion, which is the venue for various events predominantly initiated by Pacific governments, private sector and CROP agencies, as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (NZ) and the Australian Government.
As talanoa begins, the Pacific cohort will be ensuring the Pacific’s focus areas of keeping 1.5°C within reach, accelerating the transition to a resilient and low-emissions future, scaling up accessible and predictable climate finance, and making sure that those on the frontlines of the climate crisis are not left behind, remain front of mind by sharing Pacific people’s stories to be heard beyond the coral reef.
