Pacific connection at Pasifika Festival

The New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) Pacific Connections team is gearing up to join the colour and vibrancy that is Pasifika Festival, in Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau.

Since it began 32 years ago, the renowned celebration of Pacific culture has evolved to become one of the largest festivals of its kind in the world.

Director for Pacific Connections Felicity Bollen says the annual event celebrates the diverse Pacific communities of Auckland.

“Sixty-seven percent of all Pacific people in Aotearoa New Zealand live in the Auckland area, and Pasifika is a true nod to the immense talent from the region and right here in Aotearoa.

“People can enjoy various Pacific cultures, kai and beautiful arts and crafts – we are expecting between 60,000 to 100,000 visitors over the two days.

“For my team, it is an opportunity to showcase MFAT initiatives and acknowledge our partners who are helping us to achieve a positive impact in the region through education, employment, business, health and other initiatives.”

The Pacific Connections team will have a pavilion located in the sponsors area of the festival, incorporating partners Pasifika TV, Pacific Trade and Invest NZ, Manaaki Scholars, Volunteers Service Abroad and Pacific Innovation Hub, where they hope to engage with the Pacific community.

Felicity adds Pasifika Festival embodies New Zealand’s Pacific identity.

“Our presence there is a unique opportunity to celebrate our shared identity with the Pacific and to showcase our deep ties to a local, national, and global audience.”

Pasifika Festival takes place on March 8-9, at Auckland’s Western Springs.
