Friday’s round of matches in Melbourne saw Auckland FC extend their lead on the points table, following their 1-0 win over Tahiti United at the Home of the Matildas.

OFC media said the league leaders were presented with a chance early to open the scoring when Isa Prins was brought down in the area by Tahiti United goalkeeper Teave Teamotuaitau.

Initially not awarded, referee Ben Aukwai pointed to the spot following a VAR consultation.

But Prins’ attempt was saved by goalkeeper Teamotuaitau and Tahiti United survived.

Tahiti United captain Teaonui Tehau threatened at the other end for Sam Garcia’s side, his attempt saved by Auckland keeper Oscar Mason.

Thunder and lightning forced the game to be stopped for about 30 minutes.

Once play resumed Matt Ellis played through on goal and the forward finished with confidence to give his side the lead in the 62nd minute.

The victory extends Auckland FC’s lead at the top, whilst Tahiti United remain just three points outside the top four in what is turning out to be an increasingly competitive league.

In the second match of the day South Melbourne FC defeated South Island United 4-1 to stay the only unbeaten side in the competition so far.

Saturday’s matches saw an all-Melanesia clash with PNG Hekari securing their first victory of the tournament defeating Vanuatu United 3-1.

And the Solomon Kings held onto a clean sheet against a determined Bula FC side that match ending 2-0.

The standings after Saturday’s matches: Auckland, Melbourne, Kings and Vanuatu are in the top half of the table and in the bottom half of the table are South Island, Bula, Tahiti and Hekari.

The next round of matches begins on Tuesday 3 March with Tahiti United taking on PNG Hekari followed by Bula FC against South Island.

Then on Wednesday South Melbourne FC take on the Solomon Kings in a battle for second place in the standings.
