The Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer’s Residency at the University of Hawaii has been awarded to a Cook Islands artist for the first time.
Miria George is a poet, and writer for theatre, radio and television. An award-winning playwright, her work has toured New Zealand, Australia, Hawai’i, Canada and the United Kingdom.
During her three-month residency, Ms George will develop a performance piece addressing the effects of colonisation, Christianity and climate change in the Pacific.
She says she continues to draw inspiration from her Cook Islands heritage in presenting her work around the world.
“I was a little surprised to find out I was the first Cook Islander there and we have so many amazing senior artists, established artists, emerging artists so I just need to make sure that now that door’s open, that as many of us get through as possible. I’m really excited,” she said.
The Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writer’s Residency is based at the University of Hawaii, Manoa Campus. Alumni include playwright Victor Rodger, poet Tusiata Avia and filmmakers Sima Urale and Toa Fraser.
