Fijian Broadcasting Corporation's 70th anniversary celebrations continue in Lautoka.
Seven decades after humble beginnings, and Fijian Broadcasting Corporation (FBC) is continuing to celebrate its growth and success, launching its 70th birthday celebrations at Viseisei village in Vuda, Lautoka.
On July 1, 1954, FBC’s journey began with the broadcast of its first programme during the official opening ceremony.
Today, the corporation operates six radio stations, with two in each of the major local languages – Fijian, Hindustani, and English.
A free to air television service is also operated by FBC, with programmes focusing on issues faced by the people of Fiji.
The event marks a significant milestone for the organisation, celebrating 70 years of broadcasting in Fiji and successful transition to the digital era.
Veteran Radio Fiji One announcer Apakuki Waqa emphasises the importance of this anniversary, highlighting the organisation’s achievements over the years.
“The FBC has come a long way, and it has produced a number of prominent radio and news presenters in the country,” he says.
Anniversary celebrations will include visits to 70 villages across Fiji, reflecting FBC’s deep connection with local communities.
It will also coincide with the Pacific Media Partnership Conference (PMPC) to be held in partnership with this month’s Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union from February 11 to 13, 2025, in Suva.
The PMPC is an opportunity to harness the wisdom and experience of the ABU’s Pacific members while hearing insights from some of the world’s best experts.
