When Ailava Samuels faced cyberbullying in the lead-up to the Miss Pacific Islands Pageant 2026, she could have retreated.
Instead, Fiji’s representative chose to stand stronger – drawing on her role as an Ambassador for Online Safety to transform a painful experience into purposeful advocacy.
“I know firsthand how damaging online attacks can be,” Ailava says.
“I also know that we have the power to change the narrative around digital behaviour in our Pacific communities.”
As an Ambassador for Fiji’s Online Safety Commission, Ailava is deeply passionate about advocating for online safety and digital responsibility.
Now, her personal experience has deepened her commitment to this work.
She understands the real impact of harmful online behaviour – and the urgent need for change across the region.
“Cyberbullying thrives in silence and anonymity,” she explains.
“But when we speak up and model respectful online engagement, we create safer digital spaces for everyone – especially our young people.”
The eldest of seven children with strong Samoan connections, Samuels has always understood that leadership means resilience.
Her faith-centred approach to life has helped her navigate challenges with grace while remaining focused on her mission: empowering Pacific people to use digital platforms safely and respectfully.
Her multifaceted talents – from music and dance to oratory and community volunteering – reflect her belief that leadership is about service.
Through every platform available to her, including Miss Pacific Islands 2026, Ailava is demonstrating that young Pacific women can turn adversity into advocacy and personal pain into collective progress.
“This experience hasn’t diminished my voice – it’s amplified my purpose,” she adds.
“If sharing my story helps even one person stand up against cyberbullying or think twice before posting hurtful comments, then it’s worth it.”
The Miss Pacific Islands Pageant 2026, hosted in Nadi from February 13-14, celebrates cultural heritage, traditional knowledge and leadership among young Pacific women.
