Samoa has extended its current nationwide lockdown for another 72 hours to end on Thursday night. Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa says the decision was made after the identification of five frontline workers who tested positive for Covid-19 while caring for 15 positive cases off a flight from Brisbane last week.

Today is the second and final day of lockdown in Samoa with health authorities going door to door to administer Covid-19 vaccines. Around 7000 doses of AstraZeneca were administered on Thursday as part of the two-day roll out. Despite the strict lockdown, from 8am to 6pm, it is not compulsory to get vaccinated. Those willing to have the jab have been instructed to place red flags at the entrance to their dwellings.

Five months after the General Election in April, Samoa has a financial budget to operate with. The Samoa Parliament passed the national budget totalling 983 million tālā after midnight local time on Thursday. This means the private sector will finally be paid for their services after waiting while the government operated on emergency provisions of 25 percent of the 2020/2021 budget from July 1 this year.
