A sold out crowd of 15,000 were on hand to watch the Lae Snax Tigers be crowned Papua New Guinea's domestic rugby league champions for the fourth time in six years. Last season's beaten finalists defeated Waghi Tumbe 16-10 at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby on Sunday, to regain the title they last won in 2019. PNG National Rugby League Competition Manager Ora Gairo said it was a positive way to end another season disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The possible independence of Bougainville is the greatest challenge Papua New Guinea faces, the PNG Prime Minister James Marape says. The sanctity of the union of PNG as one country was very important, Marape said, and the issue was a bigger than Covid-19, the economy or other challenges. Marape said parliament will soon need to address the autonomous region's quest for independence.

The family of former Papua New Guinea Prime Minister, Sir Michael Somare, is in isolation for seven days amid the surge in Covid-19 infections in Port Moresby. The family is in mourning after the death of Sir Michael 11 days ago. His funeral is scheduled for Friday in Port Moresby after which he will be flown to Wewak for burial.

Papua New Guineans are mourning the loss of the man who was the central figure in the country's passage to independence. Sir Michael Somare died early this morning in Port Moresby after being diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer and admitted to hospital a week ago.

The long-delayed Goroka by-election in Papua New Guinea has concluded, with Aiye Tambua of the ruling Pangu Party winning the seat. Conducted under the limited preferential voting system, the election went down to elimination. Tambua edged out the former MP Bire Kimisopa, leader of the New Generation Party, who finished in second.

The Governor of Papua New Guinea's capital is urging all residents to take responsibility for protecting their community from Covid-19. Port Moresby has the majority of confirmed cases of the virus in PNG, with the total nationwide number now approaching 300. With limited testing done so far, authorities fear transmission of covid is widespread in the city.

Leaders of Papua New Guinea and Australia have signed a Comprehensive Strategic and Economic Partnership. PNG's prime minister James Marape and his Australian counterpart Scott Morrison signed the partnership at a virtual summit yesterday. The agreement looks to elevate relations in areas including security, social and human development, and economic co-operation.
