A proud Cook Islands Māori, Caren has a governance career spanning 19 years on Boards in the broadcasting, health, and arts sectors. She is a qualified Chartered Accountant and is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand. Caren’s other current board roles include Chair, Pacific Homecare Services, Board member of the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa, member of the Council of Massey University, and Director of the Hawke’s Bay Regional Economic Development Agency. She is an immediate past Chair of the Arts Council of New Zealand. Her service to governance and leadership was recognised in 2016 with the New Zealander of Year Local Hero Award and again in 2018 with the Linden Estate Hawke’s Bay Business Leader of the Year. Caren was further honoured with an Office of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2018 for services to governance and the Pacific community and in 2021 was made the inaugural Pacific Governance Leader at the Women in Governance awards. She is enthusiastic about supporting her Cook Islands and Pacific communities in New Zealand and the region to achieve their aspirations.
