The Cold Islanders: Art on the Spectrum

A collection of work touching on the personal experiences of New Zealand-born Pacific artists will feature in a new exhibition in New Zealand's Waikato region.

'The Cold Islanders: Art on the Pacific Spectrum' has 29 artists on board, exploring a range of mediums, from photography, video and painting.

Curator Leafa Wilson said the idea of 'The Cold Islanders' came from Pacific people migrating and adjusting to the cooler climates of Aotearoa.

Defending champions Fiji are claiming underdog status at the Men's Under 19 Cricket World Cup qualifiers, which get underway in Samoa today.

The Baby Blues swept their East Asia Pacific rivals two years ago to qualify for a maiden World Cup appearance in 2016, where they finished in last place.

Fiji have three players returning who took part in the previous qualifying and World Cup campaign.


Tahiti upset Cook Islands to keep RWC hopes alive

Tahiti kept alive their Rugby World Cup qualifying hopes after beating the Cook Islands 13-9 in Rarotonga to win the Oceania Cup.

In wet and windy conditions, the French territory scored two unanswered tries and kept the Cookies scoreless in the second half.

The test was marred by ill discipline, with Tahiti prop Martin Taeae, winger James Tekurio and Cook Islands centre Samuela Longo Leuta sent off amid a flurry of eight cards.


Samoa lobbying to host 2019 Pacific Games

The President of Samoa's Olympic Committee said his country is ready and waiting to host the 2019 Pacific Games.

Last week Guam joined Samoa and French Polynesia in bidding for the right to host the games after Tonga belatedly pulled out because of a lack of government support.

SASNOC's Fepuleai Patrick Fepuleai said he welcomed the competition, and everyone has the right to do what they feel is right for their own country.


NZ Hawks confident of success at International Cup

AFL New Zealand is backing its Aussie rules team to come out on top at the International Cup.

The New Zealand Hawks, formally the Falcons, are amoung the favourites of the 18 men's teams taking part in the two week Melbourne tournament that starts this weekend.

AFLNZ's chief executive Robert Vanstam said the Hawks' toughest opponents would be Ireland and the defending champion Mosquitos from Papua New Guinea.


Missing cyclone money in Tonga

The World Bank says it is working closely with Tonga's government to investigate missing cyclone funding worth over 600-thousand US dollars.

The Prime Minister Akilisi Pohiva ordered an investigation into the funds which were meant to go towards the rebuilding of homes on Ha'apai.

The island group was hit hard by Cyclone Ian in 2014, leaving thousands homeless, but the reconstruction effort had been plagued with delays and 75 homes still need to be rebuilt.
